The Norwegian Immigration Society, Inc./American Scandinavian Society |
The mission of the NIA, Inc. is to document and preserve the rich history of the contributions made by the Norwegian Immigrant Community living in the greater New York area and to make this information readily available to researchers and interested persons in all fields through technology, media, exhibits and educational/cultural events.
The Norwegian Immigration Association, Inc. (NIA) was established in 1995 as a grass roots effort to celebrate the lives of the Norwegian immigrants who settled in the New York region. By that time, a scant number of Norwegians and their descendants remained in the area. The NIA reached out to all Norwegian-American residents and former residents of New York for funding, artifacts, documents, pictures, etc. to create an exhibit, honoring our heritage. April 26, 2000, the exhibit Norwegians in New York 1825 to 2000: Builders of City, Community and Culture opened at the Ellis Island Museum in New York. Ellis Island curators reported that 2 million visitors passed through the exhibit in six months. Eleven hundred guests attended the opening gala. King Harald and Queen Sonja opened the ceremony and cut the ribbon.
The exhibit then traveled to the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Hamar, Norway. Today, the exhibit can be visited at its permanent home in Heritage Hall in Brooklyn.
Since 2000, the NIA has digitized most of the matter on display, is working with the National Library of Norway to digitize and publish Nordisk Tidende online.

Vinland Longships |
Vinland Longships is a Viking reenactment group that owns a 22 foot Viking Faering (four oared) boat. The Skogar Þrostur (SKO-gar THROW-stur) which means "Blackbird" in Old Norse, is based on the faering boat buried with the Gokstad ship in Norway in the 9th century. The reenactors who founded Vinland Longships have organized educational demonstrations on Viking ships and Viking life, crafts and culture for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the Norwegian Embassy and the American Swedish Museum, among many others. They taught docents at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and have travelled to L'Anse aux Meadows, Canada, St. Petersberg, Russia and up and down the east coast educating people about Viking ship construction, navigation and history. The Adventures of the Skogar Þrostur are documented at http://vinlandlongship.livejournal.com/. |
